source www.nevadawolfpack.com

Former Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick was selected in the second round  of the NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers on Friday.

The 49ers traded up with the Denver Broncos to select Kaepernick, the only player in college football history to pass for 10,000 yards and rush for 4,000 yards. The pick was the 34th overall and the fourth of the second round.

Linebacker Dontay Moch was selected in the third round, 66th overall, by the Cincinnati Bengals at the 2011 NFL Draft.

Moch was impressive at the 2011 NFL Combine by running a 4.40 in the 40-yard dash, the fastest time ever recorded by a defensive lineman, and recording a 42-inch vertical jump at the Combine.

Finally tight end Virgil Green was selected with the first pick of the seventh round on Saturday by the Denver Broncos.

Good luck on a long and prospers career and Thank You for a exciting year.

Friday’s Pack Report Bowl Post Game Reports

Comments Off

www.nevadawolfpack.com

BOWL SKID ENDS: Nevada had lost four consecutive bowl games entering the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl but that skid came to an end on Sunday. Nevada is now 3-6 all-time in bowl games in its FBS history.

DEFENSE DOMINATES: Boston College did not go over 100 yards of total offense until into the fourth quarter and the Nevada defense controlled the game throughout. The Wolf Pack held BC to under 50 yards of rushing well into the fourth quarter. Boston College’s first 10 points came after being set up deep in Nevada territory due to turnovers by the Pack offense.

MATTHEWS ENDS DROUGHT: Junior Rishard Matthews ended a dubious streak for the Wolf Pack. Matthews took a punt and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. The score gave Nevada at 14-7 lead at the time. It also ended a streak of 119 games with a punt return for a score, which was the third-longest drought in the nation. The last time a Nevada player had a punt return for a TD, it was Marlon McLaughlin who went 73 yards against Louisiana Tech on Oct. 13, 2001.  Matthews was named the Outstanding Offensive Player of the game.  He had 7 catches for 86 yards and a TD on the night.

KAEPERNICK GOES OVER 10K: Senior Colin Kaepernick entered the game needing just 94 yards to hit 10,000 yards passing for his career. Kaepernick did that in the first half and in doing so, became the first player in NCAA history to rush for 4,000 yards and pass for 10,000 yards in a career.

KAEPERNICK GOES OVER 3K: Kaepernick went over the 3,000-yard mark in passing this season for the first time in his career. In doing so, he became the third player in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 3,000 yards in the same season. The other two to do so: Brad Smith of Missouri and Vince Young of Texas.

ET CETERA: Nevada won the toss and elected to receive while Boston College defended the north goal … Nevada did not score on its opening drive or in the first quarter at all for just the fourth time this season … Brandon Wimberly caught a pass in the first quarter and extended his streak of consecutive games with a catch to 27 (all 27 games in his career) … Chris Barker started his 27th consecutive games (all 27 of his career)

NCAA National Championship trophies, rings, wa...

RUSTON, La. (AP) -Leave it to Colin Kaepernick to tie the NCAA record for touchdowns rushing by a quarterback on a designed pass play, all while leading Nevada to a conference title.

Kaepernick ran for three scores, including a dazzling 28-yard scramble on fourth-and-9, and the No. 14 Wolf Pack earned a share of the Western Athletic Conference championship with a 35-17 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

With a bowl game still to play, Kaepernick now has 59 career TDs on the ground, tying the mark held by Nebraska’s Eric Crouch.

“He is the leader of our team; there is no question about it,” Nevada coach Chris Ault said. “That last touchdown run he made when he scrambled on fourth down was unbelievable. That is what he does for us. He makes plays. That’s what his legs do for us. He has done that throughout his career here. He is a pretty special guy.”

On Kaepernick’s fourth-down score, Ault called for a screen pass to Via Taua, who tripped over a defender. Kaepernick, whose elusiveness gave the Bulldogs fits all afternoon, rolled away from pressure and sprinted into the open along the sideline. Just when it looked like he’d dart out of bounds, he cut inside and outran the pursuit to make it 28-17 in the fourth quarter.

“I had to scramble around and make a play. After scrambling around for a couple of seconds, it was amazing, the play just opened up and the hole was there,” Kaepernick said.

“I actually didn’t know that I had tied the record,” he continued. “To accomplish something like that is a great accolade but I have had great teammates and in particular great offensive lineman my entire time here at Nevada.”

Kaepernick wound up with 155 yards rushing, the 16th time he’d surpassed the 100-yard mark in his career. He also became the third QB in NCAA history to eclipse 4,000 yards rushing. He has 4,090, trailing only West Virginia’s Pat White (4,480) and Missouri’s Brad Smith (4,289).

“Coming out of high school I had only one scholarship offer and I just wanted to come in here and work hard,” Kaepernick said. “When I came in originally, I was not even a running quarterback, so a lot of the rushing stuff actually came as a surprise to me.”

Taua rushed for 162 yards and two scores in a victory that assured the Wolf Pack (12-1, 7-1) its first share of a WAC title since 2005, as well as its best regular season since moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 1992.

Hawaii already had won a share of the league crown and Boise State moved into a three-way tie atop the conference with its 50-14 victory over Utah State.

Ross Jenkins threw for 188 yards and one TD and also rushed for a short score for Louisiana Tech (5-7, 4-4), which saw its hopes of a bowl bid end with the loss.

Phillip Livas had 230 all-purpose yards, including 162 yards on kickoff returns. He nearly had his ninth return for a score, which would have set a new NCAA record, but was pushed out of bounds on a 60-yard run back by Nevada kicker Ricky Drake in the fourth quarter.

“Funny how me and Phillip talked Monday about how Livas hasn’t gotten tackled by a kicker and there it happens,” Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes said.

Livas joked that he’d jinxed himself, adding “I wish I could have that one back.”

The Bulldogs never trailed in the first half, taking a 7-0 lead on the first possession of the game when Jenkins hit Eric Harper with a 20-yard scoring strike along the sideline.

Nevada needed three possessions to tie it on Taua’s 1-yard plunge in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs surged back in front on Jenkins’ keeper, set up by a 36-yard pass over the middle to Taulib Ikharo to the Nevada 2.

The Wolf Pack tied it shortly before halftime on Kaepernick’s first rushing TD of the game, and option keeper to the left side on which he scored easily from 5 yards.

Nevada then received the ball to open the second half and drove 83 plays in 12 plays to take the lead for good on Kaepernick’s second TD run, which came from a yard out.

“We did some good things in the first half but in the second half they just lined up and whipped us,” Dykes said. Kaepernick “is hard to tackle and he just made plays. He is a good football player.”

Fridays Pack Report – Reno’s Dream Football Season

Comments Off

Christ Ault, head football coach for the Unive...
Image via Wikipedia

http://www.examiner.com

Nevada Wolf Pack fans, this is for you.

This dream football season, every single program-changing moment, this is for you. So, go ahead, enjoy it. You deserve it.

This is the season you’ve been waiting for, Pack fans. For forever. This is the season you’ve been rightfully demanding out of your football team. This is the season you’ve always known was possible yet never were given. Year after frustrating, disappointing year.

Well, it’s here now.

Enjoy it. Savor it. Grab it with both arms, pull it in and hug it. Embrace it, revel in it, bask in all its glory.

You’ve earned it, Pack fans.

Your Wolf Pack is among the best teams in the nation. They are 5-0 for the first time in two decades, since The Biggest Little Football Program made the jump to Division I-A in 1992. They have yet to trail in a game for even a split second. They have beaten a Pac-10 team (Cal), they have beaten the Notre Dame of the West (BYU) and they took the Fremont Cannon on a little field trip to the University of Notta Lotta Victories (the cannon’s words, not mine) this weekend and had it tucked in all warm and cozy back home in its own bed in Cashell Fieldhouse by early Sunday morning.

But that’s just the first act of this incredible three-act drama this season. If you missed it, don’t worry. The best is yet to come. Act II begins Saturday night when the Pack embarks on an eight -week journey to bring home a WAC title. The third and final act could be a Bowl Championship Series game in early January.

That’s crazy talk, right?

Well, it’s not so crazy at all.

The media ranks the Wolf Pack at No. 21 in the nation. The coaches have them at No. 23. And that, by the way, is No. 21 and 23 with a bullet. This Pack team isn’t going to stop climbing anytime soon.

If everything plays out true to form, the Pack will be unbeaten (11-0) and could be ranked in the Top 10 when it faces unbeaten (10-0) Boise State on the night of Nov. 26 at Mackay Stadium.

It will be a historic night in Reno, the greatest single sporting event in northern Nevada since Jack Johnson beat Jim Jeffries in the Fight of the Century 100 years ago. You don’t want to miss it. It will be a night you’ll tell your grandchildren about.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. There are still a ton of moments to savor between now and then. And Pack fans have earned the right to delight in each and every one of them.

I know, I know. You are a little reluctant to buy into all this Top 25, undefeated record stuff. What does the media know? What do the coaches know? You can take their stupid rankings and stuff them in your, OK, I know, I know.

We’re just five weeks into the season. There are tough road games in the near future at Hawaii, Idaho and Fresno State between now and Nov. 26. There is a scary game against Utah State — a team that also beat the Notre Dame of the West this weekend — on Oct. 30 at Mackay.

And, yes, we are well aware that the bullet we referred to above now immediately turns into a gigantic bull’s eye that the Pack must wear on its back. The Pack is now everybody’s Big Game. That’s what comes with being 5-0 and ranked No. 21.

I know, I know.

I also understand that it’s difficult to wrap your silver and blue mind around all of this hysteria right now and completely let loose and enjoy it. You’ve been through too much heartache in recent years, too many letdowns and disappointments.

I know, I know.

It’s been difficult to watch Boise State grow into the darling of college football. That should have been the Wolf Pack, right? Right. Boise was just on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week. Again.

That will never stop hurting.

It was difficult to go through those eight years of mediocrity from 1997-2004 that spanned three head coaches and just one winning season. It’s been difficult to lose to Boise year after year over the past decade. It was difficult to come home from Notre Dame, Oregon, Arizona State, Nebraska, Texas Tech, Missouri (you get the idea) with your wolf tail between your legs.

It was difficult to accept what-the-heck-just-happened inexcusable losses to New Mexico State at home in 2008, at Colorado State last year and at San Jose State in 2007 (to name just three).

This program has let you down before. You don’t want to be hurt again.

I know, I know.

Well, we’re here to tell you it’s safe to let loose. It’s safe to go out in the middle of the night, howl at the moon and show your Pack pride.

You’ve paid your dues.

You’ve earned this.

This is a special team, with special athletes and young men. They know what you’ve gone through in recent years. They know how hard it’s been. Heck, most of them lived it. That’s why they are so determined to change all that. It’s personal for them.

The seniors alone, many of which will show up on the Pack’s second All-Century team 90 years from now, have earned your support. Colin Kaepernick, Vai Taua, Dontay Moch, Virgil Green, John Bender, to name just five. Future Pack Hall of Famers.

Appreciate them. They appreciate you.

“It’s amazing,” said Kaepernick late Saturday night, when asked about all of the Wolf Pack fans in attendance at Sam Boyd Stadium. “It’s great to see all of that blue in the crowd.”

“That’s what we needed,” said Taua of the crowd. “The fans’ support makes us play even harder. The more support the better.”

Yes, Pack fans, you have done your part this year already. You showed up (nearly 30,000) two weeks ago to help the Pack beat Cal in the game that kicked this dream season into high gear.

Nice job. Give yourself a pat on the back. Now go get five of your friends and bring them to the rest of the games this year.

“It was a big shock to me to see how many came down from Reno for this game,” Moch said after the 44-26 win over UNLV. “Two years ago not too many showed up. This year it was a packed house for Nevada.”

Kaepernick, who looks more and more each week like the best player to ever put on a Wolf Pack uniform, has just four home games left in his career at Mackay Stadium. Taua, who is also in that Best Pack Player Ever conversation, also has four games left. The same for Moch and the rest of the seniors.

Yes, Pack fans, it goes fast. Just when it gets good, it disappears.

So don’t miss it.

You’ve earned it.

Eastern Washington had pulled to within 35-24 when Darriell Beaumonte scored from a yard out with 1:21 left in the third quarter. The Eagles forced the Wolf Pack to punt on its next possession, but wide receiver Nicholas Edwards fumbled after a reception as the Eagles were driving and Nevada recovered.

Taua scored three plays later.
