Speed eating legend Takeru Kobayashi has set a new record, this time setting a new benchmark for the most Twinkies eaten in one minute.

The Japanese competitive eater managed to scoff 14 of the cream filled sponge cakes on set of the Wendy Williams Show in New York, USA earlier today.

Today’s record adds to Kobayashi’s five other Guinness World Record titles (Fastest time to eat a bowl of pasta, most hamburgers eaten in three minutes, most hot dogs eaten in 12 minutes, most hot dogs eaten in 3 minutes, and most meatballs eaten in one minute).

Pack Vs Aces Exhibition Tuesday April 3

RENO, Nev.—The Reno Aces and the University of Nevada baseball team will renew their annual exhibition contest at 6:05 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3 at Aces Ballpark, with proceeds once again benefiting the Nevada Dugout Club, the entities jointly announced today.

The 2012 exhibition will mark the third-straight exhibition contest between Reno’s Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the NCAA Division I Wolf Pack. The Aces defeated Nevada 9-3 last season, on the heels of an 11-1 victory in the inaugural game in 2010.

In each of the last two seasons, the Aces have made a $15,000 donation to the University of Nevada Dugout Club, an organization that serves as the main fundraising body of the University of Nevada baseball team.

The game will serve as the final tune-up for the Aces before opening the 2012 season on April 5, while Nevada’s student-athletes will have the opportunity to compete against some of professional baseball’s top prospects at the Triple-A level.

Once again this season, the game will be played in an exhibition format, with Aces pitchers and catchers playing for both squads. All players will use wood bats, and the contest will last between seven and nine innings, depending on the status of the Aces pitching staff. Utilizing the traditional Minor League Spring Training format, pitchers will be placed on a pitch count, and should a pitcher reach his limit, the game will immediately proceed to the next half inning.

Tickets for the game are $14 for adults, $10 for college students and $7 for children 12 and younger and seniors 62 and older. Aces season-ticket holders will have the chance to purchase tickets at a discounted rate of $10, and will be eligible for an exclusive presale opportunity. Tickets may be purchased online at www.RenoAces.com beginning Monday, March 20 and at the Reno Aces Ticket Office on Saturday, March 10.

The Aces begin their defense of the Pacific North Division Championship on Thursday, April 5 at Aces Ballpark. All full and partial Aces season tickets are available now by calling (775) 334-4700. Pending home sales, a forward-looking indicator based on signed contracts, fell 3.5% in December after a 7.3% increase in November. On a year-over-year basis, pending home sales are up 5.6%.

The Mortgage Bankers Association said its seasonally adjusted composite index of mortgage applications for the week ending January 20 fell 5%. Refinancing applications decreased 5.2%. Purchase volume fell 5.4%.

Orders for durable goods — items expected to last three or more years — rose $6.2 billion or 3% to $214.5 billion in December. This increase surpassed the 2.2% economists had anticipated and follows a 4.3% surge in November. Excluding volatile transportation-related goods, orders posted a monthly increase of 2.1%.

New home sales fell 2.2% in December to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 307,000 units from a revised rate of 314,000 units in November. Compared to a year ago, new home sales are down 7.3%.

Retail sales fell 1.4% for the week ending January 21, according to the ICSC-Goldman Sachs index. On a year-over-year basis, retailers saw sales increase 2.8%.

The Commerce Department announced that gross domestic product — the total output of goods and services produced in the U.S. — increased at an annual rate of 2.8% in the fourth quarter of 2011. This follows a 1.8% pace of growth in the third quarter of 2011. For all of 2011, initial reports indicate the economy expanded 1.7%.

Initial claims for unemployment benefits rose by 21,000 to 377,000 for the week ending January 21. Continuing claims for the week ending January 14 rose by 88,000 to 3.554 million

Pack Report: Football Announces Four Mid-Year Enrollees

Two junior college transfers and two prep products have enrolled in classes this semester at the University of Nevada, the Wolf Pack football program announced today.

Defensive backs Nigel Haikins and Markus Smith, both juniors, join the Wolf Pack from the junior college ranks while Reggie Coates and Andrew Main previously signed National Letters of Intent with Nevada in 2011 and delayed enrollment until the spring semester.

Haikins is 5-10 and 205 pounds and comes to Nevada from Diablo Valley College in the Bay Area. Smith is 6-1, 185 and joins the Pack from Riverside (Calif.) Community College.

Coates (Crespi HS; Canoga Park, Calif.) is a 6-1, 240-pound freshman defensive end while Main (Los Alamitos HS; Los Alamitos, Calif.) is a 6-3, 270-pound freshman offensive lineman.

More information on the players will be available along with the rest of the 2012 signing class, which will be announced Feb. 1

The Mortgage Bankers Association said its seasonally adjusted composite index of mortgage applications for the week ending January 13 rose 23.1%. Refinancing applications increased 26.4%. Purchase volume rose 10.3%.

The producer price index, which tracks wholesale price inflation, fell 0.1% in December after increasing 0.3% in November. For the year, wholesale prices are up 4.8%. Core prices — which exclude food and fuel — rose 0.3% in December.

The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo monthly housing market index rose four points in January to 25 from a reading of 21 in December. It was the highest level since June 2007. An index reading below 50 indicates negative sentiment about the housing market.

The combined construction of new single-family homes and apartments in December fell 4.1% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 657,000 units. Single-family starts increased 4.4%. Multifamily starts fell 20.4%. Applications for new building permits, seen as an indicator of future activity, fell 0.1% to an annual rate of 679,000 units. Housing starts for the year are up 24.9%.

Existing home sales rose 5% in December to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.61 million units from a downwardly revised 4.39 million units in November. The inventory of unsold homes on the market decreased to 2.38 million, a 6.2-month supply at the current sales pace, down from a 7.2-month supply in November.

Initial claims for unemployment benefits fell by 50,000 to 352,000 for the week ending January 14. It was the lowest level since April 2008. Continuing claims for the week ending January 7 fell by 215,000 to 3.432 million.

Mortgage Rates Reach New Record Lows

Mortgage rates were back to hitting record lows again, pushing housing affordability even higher to home buyers, Freddie Mac reports in its weekly mortgage market survey. For the sixth consecutive week, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, the most popular choice among buyers, has averaged below 4 percent — unheard of until a few weeks ago.

“Mortgage rates eased slightly this week to all-time record lows following mixed indicators in the labor market,” Frank Nothaft, chief economist at Freddie Mac, said in a statement. The economy added 1.6 million jobs in 2011 — the highest number since 2006 — but overall unemployment still remains high, Nothaft noted.

Here’s a closer look at rates and the new record lows they posted for the week ending Jan. 12:

  • 30-year fixed-rate mortgages: averaged 3.89 percent, with an average 0.7 point, reaching a new all-time low. Previously, 30-year mortgages’ record low was last week’s 3.91 percent average. A year ago at this time, 30-year rates averaged 4.71 percent.
  • 15-year fixed-rate mortgages: averaged 3.16 percent, with an average 0.8 point, dropping from last week’s 3.23 percent average. Last year at this time, 15-year rates averaged 4.08 percent.
  • 5-year adjustable-rate mortgages: averaged 2.82 percent, with an average 0.7 point, dropping from last week’s 2.86 percent average. Last year at this time, 5-year ARMs averaged 3.72 percent.
  • 1-year ARMs: averaged 2.76 percent, with an average 0.6 point, this week, falling from last week’s 2.80 percent average. A year ago, 1-year ARMs averaged 3.23 percent.

Pack Report: Nevada Completed 2012 Non-Conference Football Schedule

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada has completed its 2012 non-conference football schedule with the addition of a home game against the University of South Florida, a member of the Big East Conference, the school announced Tuesday. The matchup is part of a two-game series between the teams as Nevada will play at South Florida in 2015.

Nevada will travel to face California on Sept. 1 to open the season and the Wolf Pack will then come home to Mackay Stadium to play host to South Florida (Sept. 8) and Northwestern State (Sept. 15). After a bye week, Nevada will play at Texas State (Sept. 29) before beginning the Pack’s first ever Mountain West slate.

“USF has an outstanding football team that will present us with some unique challenges,” Nevada coach Chris Ault said. “They are well coached and have some quality players.  This is a game our fans won’t want to miss.”

This marks the sixth time since 2005 that Nevada has played host to a BCS conference school. Nevada has four wins against BCS school since the inception of the series in 1998.

This will be the first meeting between Nevada and USF. The Bulls went 5-7 in 2011 — their first non-winning season since 2004 — and are 13-12 under head coach Skip Holtz, who will be entering his third season in 2012.

“Nevada offers a difficult test for us,” Holtz said. “Offensively, they’ve been very productive under Coach Ault and they’ve had a lot of success as a team over the last few years. Going on the road and playing in a tough environment early in the season will give us an opportunity to see where we are and could help us as we move deeper into the schedule.”

The trip to Reno in 2012 will mark the third time in USF program history that it will play west of the Rocky Mountains. The Bulls traveled to San Diego to take on San Diego St. in 1999 and they also visited Utah in 2001.

The Mountain West portion of the schedule will be released in the coming months. Nevada will have four home games in league play as Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Wyoming will come to Mackay Stadium. The Wolf Pack’s conference road games will be against Air Force, Hawaii, New Mexico and UNLV.
